Ayurveda a key to prevent Osteoarthritis degenerative joint disease


It is a degenerative joint disease leading to degradation of joints including articular cartilage and bone. It is a condition in which the cartilage that acts as a cushion between bones in joints degenerates and thereby causing pain and inflammation in the joints. Mostly affected joints are Knee, Hands, Fingers and Big toe. Symptoms can vary from pain to loss of mobility.

• Loss of strength in muscles supporting joints etc

Primary OA:
As age advances the cartilage in the joints get degenerated and the breakdown products from the cartilage are released into the synovial space and the cells lining the joints attempt to remove hem and new bony outgrowths called spurs or osteophytes can form on the margin of the joints.

Secondary OA:
Caused by other factors like Diabetes, Injury to joints, Infection of joints, Inflammatory diseases.

Signs and Symptoms:
Pain, stiffness, tenderness, restriction of movements of joints, inflammation.

Ayurvedic treatments focus on arresting the progression of the disease and thereby improving functions of joints and alleviating the pain which includes internal medication and external treatment procedures.
