Ritucharya – Seasonal Routine according to Ayurveda

Ritu means Season and Charya means do’s and don’ts (regime). Ritucharya is the observance of diet and regime according to the seasonal changes occurring in India. As we already know, our diet, activities and routine have a direct impact on our health. The environment we live in and the changing seasons also affect our health. The doshas keep changing according to the season. Hence it is important to make some changes in our diet and regime according to the season. There is diversity of seasons in India.

There are 6 types of seasons namely :-

  1. Hemant Ritu – Early Winters
  2. Basant Ritu – Spring
  3. Gresham Ritu – Summers
  4. Varsha Ritu – Rainy
  5. Sharad Ritu – Autumn
  6. Shishir Ritu – Winter

Hemant Ritu (Margshirsh and Pausha that is from Mid-November to Mid -January) and Shishir Ritu (Maagh and Phalgun that is from Mid-January to Mid-March)

This is the time when winters start in India. The environment is dusty and visibility is less due to fog. According to Ayurveda, during this period there is increase in appetite due to which heavy food also gets easily digested.

Diet to be followed:

  • Include sweet and sour food in your diet. Increased vata gets obstructed due to cold weather outside and can digest the tissues. More intake to sweets and sour items can help in reducing the vata.
  • Jaggery can be included in the diet as it is considered to be very useful for the body in the winter season.
  • Diet including wheat or gram flour should be used. Milk products can be consumed.
  • Products from sugarcane can be taken.

Lifestyle to be followed:

  • Regular oil massage should be done as our body tends to dry up easily this season.
  • Body massage using kesar powder (udavarthanam) can be done as it helps in removing toxins through skin.
  • People should indulge in regular exercise during this season.

Basant Ritu (Chaitra and Baishakh that is about Mid-March to Mid-May) – 

This season is commonly known as the spring season. Environment here is clear and non-dusty. In this season increased kapha is liquefied by the heat of the sun which causes decline in digestive system that causes diseases.

Diet to be followed:

  • Consume food which are easily digestible.
  • Heavy food must be restricted.
  • Oily food should not be consumed.
  • Honey should be consumed as it helps in avoiding diseases caused by kapha.
  • Barley should be consumed. Arishtas can also be consumed during this season.

Lifestyle to be followed:

  • Sleeping during daytime should be restricted.
  • People should exercise regularly.
  • Uptan (facial) should be done.
  • Nasal medication can be taken.

Grishma Ritu (Jyasth and Aasadha that is about Mid-May to Mid-July)

Commonly known as summer season where heat is increased during this season. Due to which Kapha decreases and Vata increases day by day. Dehydration, exhaustion and lack of energy can be experienced during this season.

Diet to be followed:

  • Lot of liquids should be consumed during this season.
  • Milk and yogurt can be taken in this season.
  • Fresh juices, salads and buttermilk can be consumed in large quantities.
  • Drink cold water

Lifestyle to be followed:

  • Avoid excessive physical workout.
  • Apply Chandan paste and bathe in cold water.
  • Sleeping during the day is permitted as nights are quite short during summer season.

Varsha Ritu (Shraavan and Bhadrapad that is between Mid-July to Mid-September)

Commonly known as rainy season. The digestive activity was already weak in the summer season but again it gets triggered during rainy season. Therefore all methods to mitigate the doshas and enhance the digestive activity must be adopted.

The body which is in the durbal avasta ( to purific the doshas and make the doshas healthy and remove the toxins the body Karkidaka chikitsa( monsoon ayurvedic treatment) are done. Mainly Panchakarma chikitsa are done in this period.

Diet to be followed:

  • Food that is easily digested should be consumed.
  • Pulses, soups and old grains should be consumed.
  • Green leafy vegetables must be taken in low quantity or can be avoided if possible.
  • Black pepper, lemon juice and ginger should be consumed to strengthen the digestive system.

Lifestyle to be followed:

  • Panchakarma should be adopted during this season as it helps to enhance the digestive activity.
  • Apply Agarwood oil to the body.
  • Udavarthanam can be done during this season.
  • Avoid exertion.

Sharad Ritu (Ashvin and Kaartik that is between Mid-September to Mid-November)

Also known as autumn season. There is a sudden exposure to sunlight which increases pitta.

Diet to be followed:

  • Processed ghee with bitter herbs can be consumed.
  • Avoid heavy intake of food.
  • Wheat, barley and rice can be consumed.
  • Easily digestible food like honey, rice, gooseberry and cereals should be consumed.

Lifestyle to be followed:

  • Udvartana of Chandan (sandalwood) must be applied.
  • Bathe in warm water.
  • Abstain from liquors.
  • Avoid sleeping during the day.
  • Engage in physical exercise.

Low Vitamin D levels may damage your brain and body


Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin as the body naturally produces it when the skin is directly exposed to sunlight. But not getting enough vitamin D can hurt your health in ways you may not expect.

1. Developing a risk of Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Adults who had moderate deficiency in vitamin D had a 53% increased risk of developing dementia, and those who were severely deficient had a 125% increased risk of the Alzheimer’s disease. A diet low in vitamin D for several months,  can develop free radical damage to the brain.

Researchers found that in the early-stage of multiple sclerosis patients with adequate levels of vitamin D had a 57% lower rate of new brain lesions and a 57% lower relapse rate than those with lower vitamin D levels. Researchers say that identifying and treating vitamin D deficiency should become part of care for the newly diagnosed patients.
