Kizhi- Ayurveda treatment for pain relief

Kizhi (Potali massage) is an Ayurveda treatment with much importance. ‘Kizhi’ the term is taken from Malayalam language and it has the south Indian domination. It is a south Indian domination. It is a massage therapy and a part of Ayurveda mainly aims to enhance and protect the health and wellness of the whole body and purifies and rejuvenate the body, mind and soul.

This is a technique by which whole body or specific parts are made to sweat by using warm poultries containing herbs, herbal powders, rice, sand etc. mainly provides heat for aggravated vata and vata kapha conditions.

Aches and pains associated with the joints and muscular Skelton are caused by aggravation of vata. The heat generated in kizhi help to pacify the aggravated vata thus reliving the associated pain immediately more over the enhanced blood supply due to hot fomentation helps to recover from muscular pain. Enhanced circulation reduces the oxidative stress thereby relieving the psycho-physical symptoms of stress.

1. Navara Kizhi:-

Navara kizhi is rejuvenation therapy that is very useful for arthritis, therapy that is very useful for arthritis, muscular wasting, general weakness paralysis, pain related to joints and sore muscular.

This is fomentation technique makes use of variety of rice that has medicinal properties known as Navara or Njavara rice. Kizhi are made of Njavara rice which is cooked in cow’s milk along with certain herbs medicated oil is first smeared on the head and body of the patient and the body is massaged with rice bags (kizhi) .It removes stiffness , promotes sound sleep and makes entire body strong and well developed. It also boosts the immune system and slows down the ageing process. It improves the lustre and texture of skin indicated in muscular dystrophy, cervical myelopathy, MND.

2. Mutta Kizhi:- 

Mutta kizhi is a form of treatment where eggs and herbal powders are made into potali and then applied to the body along with hot medicated oil. Mutta kizhi is very effective in facial paralysis and hemiplegia.

3. Jambeera pinda sweda (Naranga Kizhi):- 

Naranga kizhi is done with kizhi containing cut and fried pieces of lemon , garlic , rock salt, turmeric powder ,along with medicated oils. Naranga kizhi is indicated in osteoarthritis, muscular cramps , frozen shoulder, stiffness of joints , PA Shoulder.

4. Ela Kizhi:-

Elakizhi is a treatment that use different types of medicinal leaves and medicated oils to heal pain, related conditions and strengthen and rejuvenate joints, muscles and soft tissues. Elakizhi is indicated in Arthritis, osteoarthritis   sciatica, cervical spondylosis, musculoskeletal pains, myalgia etc.

5. Podi Kizhi:-

Podikizhi is the Ayurvedic technique of fomentation in which cotton bags filled with variety of herbal powders are used. Podikizhi is the common type of Ayurvedic massage technique , that helps in alleviating pain and reduces swelling occurred due to arthritis , muscular spasm, sciatica , lumbago ,Arthritis spondylosis, Rheumatoid arthritis, muscular stiffness, swelling on joints due to osteoarthritis , paralysis and other neurological disease, ankylosing spondylosis, gouty arthritis.

6. Mamsa Kizhi:-

Mamsa Kizhi is specialize therapy  which is performed for the disease related to bone, muscles and nerves .Mamsa means meat  generally uses goat meat, Pinda means bolus sweda means fomentation. The sweda using a bolus which is prepared by using meat along with medicated rice and others herbs is called as Mamsa Kizhi. It is a type of nourishing therapy. The Mamsa which is used for this purpose is processed with different medicine according to the condition of the patient and disease Mamsa Kizhi is indicated in muscular dystrophy, paralysis, premature aging arthritis etc.
