Help yourself Prevent Back Pain!

Vertebral Column is the basis of most bodily movements, so its easily affected by a large number of ailments. Vertebral column is a collection of 32 vertebrae. In between them are the rubber-like discs. These discs help in supporting body weight, connect the vertebrae helps, in movement and also work as a shock absorber.
The body of the vertebra is called the ‘vertebral body’. The important parts of a vertebra are the spikes on its sides called ‘transverse process’ and those jutting out to the back, called ‘spinal process’. They are connected by small muscles.
Chances of pain are more in areas of the back and neck where the movement is more. To avoid this, follow the instructions below.

Diseases affecting the back:
Diseases are possible to occur in many parts of the back like the disc, bones, muscles, and nerves.
Heavy blow or ageing can result in degenerating of the disc, bringing the vertebrae closer. This is closeness of the disc. When the disc suffers from an oedema due to any reason, the vertebrae look as if they have moved apart. This is usually called the widening of the vertebrae. The protrusion of the disc and its sliding can also cause immense pain. The wear and tear of the bones, spondylosis or arthritis of the joints, low density of bones, tumours formed them, all these are diseases related to the bone. Emaciation, heavy blow, breaking of the ligaments due to unusually high contraction, oedema in the muscle, all these are ailments of the muscles. Oedema of the nerves, disintegration covering due to diabetes or the likes, when the nerves wane due to deficiency of certain vitamins, all these can be reasons for back pain. Pains at the joints of the vertebrae, degeneration, wear and tear all these appear as diseases of the joints.

Prevention of Back Pain :
Altering food habits, lifestyle modification and exercise are the best way to prevent back pain.

Give attention to the following :

  • While standing, sitting, or walking, be sure to keep your vertebral column straight.
  • Make sure you will be able to lift the weight before actually lifting it.
  • Lift it up slowly, giving our brain time to get ready.
  • Take care to lift the weight from very near our body.
  • Sleep on hard surfaces.
  • Eat lots of vegetarian food comprising calcium, vitamins and leafy vegetables.
  • Try to avoid fatty, spicy and sour foods as much as possible.
  • Slightly massage using a kuzhumbu before bath, regularly.
  • Give small exercises to the back for 15 minutes daily.
  • Walk for half an hour daily
  • Avoid consuming alcohol and smoking.
  • Make sure your bowel movement is proper.
  • In case of slight pain, take complete rest for two days. If still no relief, consult a physician.

In case of Back Pain :
Rest is the main treatment for back pain. Massage using a ‘vatha pacifying’ kuzhambu and steam the area with water boiled with leaves of avanakku, tobacco, tamarind, erukku, and also have a bath in lukewarm water. Sleep on your back on a wooden cot, keeping a pillow under the knee. It is good that a person with experience slightly massage the area. If none of this brings any relief to the pain in two days, or if the pain becomes severe or if you feel shooting pain to the leg, it is better to take advice of a physician.

Treatment :
It is important to find the reasons for the back pain. For this the physician will have a thorough study of the patient and the history of the ailment, after which he may advise X-ray, scanning, etc. and in many cases laboratory tests.
Medical management in case of weakness of the bones, Panchakarma treatment in case of oedema or arthritis, massage for problems with the disc, belt one the modalities of treatment. All these one parts may become necessary. Only a good physician will be able to advise you on this.

The Benefits of Ayurvedic Oils.

Traditional Ayurveda medicine practice is based on ancient Hindu philosophy and is centered on the idea of creating a long & fulfilling life, meaning the principles are to encourage vitality, health and longevity.
The actual practice is largely based on prevention, rather than cure. At the core of prevention is the every day custom of personal healthcare – a type of regular health maintenance.
Fundamental to this is daily self massage, known as abhyanga. Massage with Ayurvedic oils can relieve your mind and body from many kinds of stresses and toxic build ups. Regular self massage rejuvenates your entire physical structure and promotes mental relaxation.
Ancient Indian texts written 5000 years ago state that ‘a person with a view to preserving and promoting positive health should use massage therapy every day’.

How can Ayurveda Oils enhance your wellbeing?
Daily self massage with Ayurveda oils is a positive way of unlocking the body’s innate healing ability, revitalising the body and mind & empowers you to maintain your body’s optimum health.
We live in a ‘time-poor’ society, and many of us are experiencing high levels of stress and feel overwhelmed by the pace and pressure of our busy lives. The effects of stress have a negative impact on our overall physical and mental wellbeing and leave us with an ‘out of sorts’ feeling.
Our skin contains the greatest amount of beneficial hormones, therefore, touch through massage communicates a positive therapeutic message. It balances the endocrine and nervous systems, enlivens the vital energy points (marma points) and affects literally billions of nerve endings that connect to all parts of the body including the brain and vital organs.
Toxins are dislodged from the bodily tissues and gently eliminated, leaving our entire system deeply balanced and nourished.

What conditions can oils be used for?

  • Insomnia
  • Stress
  • Muscular pain
  • Arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Back pain
  • Psoriasis
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Immunity
  • Nourish dry skin
  • Circulation
  • Concentration

How do Ayurveda oils work?
Ayurvedic massage has become a lifestyle for the people of India . It is a natural form of exercise that offers a balance between the mind and the body.
It is believed in the Ayurveda system that each human being is composed of a Dosha. According to doctrines, a dosha is a combination of the 5 different elements; ether, wind, fire, water and earth. Doshas, according to Ayurveda, need to remain balanced in a person. An imbalance will manifest a negative or undesirable condition.
Using Ayurvedic oils in massage is a potent contributor at maintaining harmony & balance. Due to the extremely small size of the oil molecule, Ayurveda oils penetrate the skin easily and transport the healing properties of nature, directly to the cells in the body.

How are the oils made?
Each Ayurveda oil (thailam) has a unique & specific formula that can contain the components of up to 50 different plants. As the oil molecule is extremely small it easily penetrates the skin, delivering the medicinal properties to all the cells in the body. Given our modern lifestyle, our cells can become overwhelmed & dysfunctional.
Each ingredient has been carefully selected for its physiologic action in the body & to help restore the body’s natural state of health. More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda is the science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge).
